Asynchronous Virtual Offerings Available Beginning June 21, 2021

Asynchronous  – Intro to Additive Manufacturing – 3D Printers & Design Tools  – Virtual – Click to Register

Workshop Overview: 3rd-12th grade educators, with an interest in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines are invited to participate in this entry level Innovative Additive Manufacturing: Introduction to 3D Printing and Design virtual workshop. Participants will be walked, asynchronously, through the assembly, operation, and application of an affordable, manageable, entry level 3D printer. Click here for more information

Cost: $500 per person for access to workshop videos, 3D printer, filament, materials and program ideas.

All workshop participants are encouraged to engage with Square One for ongoing support as needed.

Asynchronous  – Intro to Micro:bit  – Virtual – Click to Register

6-12th grade educators, with an interest in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines are invited to participate in this introduction to physical computing via drag and drop coding on a versatile vehicle platform. Materials for individual student use are affordable and accessible, typically $30/student or pair of students. This will be discussed in the tutorials.

Participants will receive access to online tutorials that can be accessed at their convenience, and materials shipped directly to them. The skills and activities presented in this 3-session asynchronous video workshop support computer science, technology, engineering and math in a fun, engaging, and

Asynchronous  – Robots on the Road  – Virtual – Click to Register

6th-12th grade educators, with an interest in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines are invited to participate in
this physical computing challenge, utilizing drag and drop coding on a versatile robotic vehicle platform. This project will focus on authentic, real world engineering challenges in the world of advanced driver assist systems and autonomous vehicle technology. Participants will receive access to online tutorials that can be accessed at their convenience, and materials will be shipped directly to them for use during “class.”   Micro:Bit is a microprocessor that is Chromebook-friendly, introducing drag and drop coding for a physical computing experience. In this offering, a vehicle is added for a more complex experience and longer camp or after school club program. June 28-29  – Introductory Underwater ROV Workshop  – Oak Park, MI – Click to Register

This workshop provides a teacher introduction to Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).  Participants will leave with a fully functioning underwater ROV valued over $600, and will be prepared to share the technology with their students and lead student teams for the Underwater IVD Competition.  Click here for more information

Cost: $1000 per “kit” (or team) – includes all hardware, materials, meals, and resources for groups of one to three participants to build a fully functioning ROV.

July 12-14  – Intermediate Underwater ROV Workshop  – Marquette, MI – Email for more info

This workshop helps experienced teachers bring their underwater analog robots into the digital world.  We’ll start by introducing Arduino microcontrollers and digital electronics and then apply those technologies to create joystick based ROV controls, digital motor controllers, and on-board sensor technologies.  We’ll also integrate a “claw” and its controls into our ROV Hardware.  This workshop is specifically designed for teachers who have already completed a Square One Introductory ROV Workshop, and compete in the Underwater IVD Challenges.

The Masters of Mobility:  Cyber Security on the Road Program will provide training for Michigan high school teachers, offering them a package of resource and materials to provide a hands on, project based classroom experience for their students that will introduce ethical considerations and CANBUS protocols (how small computers in cars communicate amongst themselves).  This training will provide the building blocks of Cyber Security ethics and CANBUS that support Michigan’s benchmarks relative to Computer Science.   Experts from the industry will share insights and leaders from WCC will share the opportunity pipeline for your students as we take this big idea and transform it into classroom  size chunks!.  Click here for more information

July 26-30 – Modeling Mobility Workshop  – Detroit Metro Area – Email for more info

This workshop is generously sponsored by our friends at Bosch, the MiSTEM Network, and Oakland Schools.  The workshop is specifically offered to teachers involved in Michigan Modeling Science Pedagogy.  Participants will be introduced to the world of Automotive Mobility, specifically Connected & Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) Technologies as a tool for Modeling based instruction in physical science classrooms.  We’ll dig into Arduino programming and the Elegoo robotic vehicle as a tool to model real life CAV Scenarios.

These workshops prepare teacher leaders to “kickstart” their Innovative Vehicle Design (IVD) seasons, and get their student engineers off and running.  The one day workshops provide an overview of program rules and rule changes, technical sessions focused on topics tailored to the individual programs, and an open forum to collaborate and learn from other coaches and teams.

On this day prior to our culminating competition, we invite IVD Teams to Kettering University for some exclusive & exciting campus experiences.  Student teams can not only set up their pit spaces for the competition on the 19th, but also get a behind the scenes look at all the great Kettering facilities and opportunities, hear from Kettering faculty, staff and students, and then get some practice time with their IVD vehicles on the competition tracks.

The IVD Challenge Day is the culminating competition for all of the “wheeled” Innovative Vehicle Design Programs (Autonomous, Full Scale, Mini and V2X IVD Challenges). Kettering’s “GM Mobility Research Center” is a vehicle testing facility used by automotive companies and suppliers for testing new technologies, and offers a wonderful setting for the IVD Challenges.  Student teams compete throughout the day in a variety of missions on a host of different courses.  The public is welcome to join in the fun and experience the amazing work of our student engineers.
