May 16, 2023 – IVD Challenge Day – Kettering University, Flint MI – Email for more info
The IVD Challenge Day is the culminating competition for all of the “wheeled” Innovative Vehicle Design Programs (Autonomous, Full Scale, Mini and V2X IVD Challenges). Kettering’s “GM Mobility Research Center” is a vehicle testing facility used by automotive companies and suppliers for testing new technologies, and offers a wonderful setting for the IVD Challenges. Student teams compete throughout the day in a variety of missions on a host of different courses. The public is welcome to join in the fun and experience the amazing work of our student engineers.
May 24, 2023 – UP Underwater IVD Competition – Lake Superior State University, Sault Ste Marie, MI – Email for more info
The Underwater IVD Challenge is the culminating competition for the Underwater Innovative Vehicle Design Program (Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles – ROVs). Student teams compete throughout the day in a variety of missions at the bottom of the pool. The public is welcome to join in the fun and experience the amazing work of our student engineers.
June 21-22, 2023 – Intro to Underwater ROV Engineering Teacher Workshop – Muskegon – Link to Flyer
Educators with an interest in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines are invited to attend this exciting 2-day workshop that provides a truly unique educational opportunity. Participants will receive instruction along with materials and support to design, engineer, and construct a fully functional underwater remotely operated vehicle or ROV. Participants keep their ROVs for use in their classrooms. ROVs are highly engaging tools for use in a variety of underwater investigations in Biology, Physics, History, STEM Classes and more. Teachers will also leave the workshop empowered to launch and mentor a student team for Square One’s Underwater IVD Competitions (optional).

July 11-13, 2023 – Masters of Mobility Teacher Workshop – Grayling – Link to Flyer
Square One offers this unique classroom learning experience around connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technology (self-driving cars that can sense each other to avoid collisions) and entry level programming. We take the big ideas behind one of Michigan’s leading industries and break it down into bite sized chunks suitable for classroom teachers to share with their students. We combine wireless communication, ultrasonic sensors, and small robotic vehicles to introduce the concepts and vocabulary around the mobility industry while helping teachers integrate this content into physics, computer science, and/or other STEM or CTE coursework, or after school clubs. For code.org students, Masters of Mobility is a logical next step into physical computing…coding to make something happen! Lights blinking, motors turning, and vehicles sensing obstacles or staying in their lanes make for a real world, tangible application of wireless communication and lines and lines of code. The Masters of Mobility training is built around a kit of materials that includes the BBC-developed Micro: Bit and a robust vehicle, including both ultrasonics and an object recognition camera. This workshop will focus on graphical programming, but both Python and Java Script are options available with the Micro: Bit.
